David Moulton: The power of Tim Tebow is compelling, indeed

I had been around the phenomenon that is Tim Tebow since the very beginning.

Tim Tebow : As part of the SEC on CBS broadcast crew, we televised 24 of his college games. Up close and personal for two national titles, a Heisman trophy and “the Promise.” Then on to the NFL where he was a first-round pick last year and comeback king this year.

But I did not realize the full extent of what Tim Tebow could accomplish until last Sunday. It was then that what can only be described as a miracle took place.

I have known my wife for more than 18 years and been married for over 15. We do not watch sports together. She is not interested. At all.

Tim Tebow : Occasionally she is the same room where I’m watching sports, but she has no interest with what is happening on the TV.

Four years ago I brought her to Tuscaloosa for then No. 1 LSU vs. Alabama. Nick Saban’s first meeting as Bama coach against his old school There were 92,000 fans and fighter jets. We even had an American Idol winner in the CBS broadcast booth with us. The game was decided in the final two minutes, 34-27. Very intense and exciting.

She read a therapy book for three hours.

So imagine the shock when my wife plopped down next to me last Sunday and started yelling at the TV.

Tim Tebow : To be accurate, she was screaming AND yelling for Tim Tebow. It is the first time I had ever seen her emotionally involved about sports on TV. When Tebow threw the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime, my wife AND teenage daughter were jumping, dancing, yelling and high-fiving together. My wife then began texting all of her friends about Tebow.

My wife, watching and texting about sports! Thank you, Tim Tebow.

Then six days later it got better.

As a middle-aged married man, Saturday night is big. Kia HUGE. In many a household it’s “make it happen” night, on and off the field. Earlier in the week I was told, “Don’t make any plans Saturday night because we’re having a date.”

Great.

When dinnertime arrived my wife was in sweats and a T-shirt. I asked, “What about our date?” She went to the pantry and pulled out a Super Bowl party’s worth of snacks. When I opened the fridge there was shrimp and soda.

I closed the door, our eyes met and she said lovingly, “We’re staying home and watching Tebow.”

God bless you, Tim!

An hour later, I tempted fate. With cheese and salsa dripping from our cheeks I asked, “What is it about Tim Tebow that is making you watch when you’ve never watched before?” She said simply, “It’s not his faith. It’s not his charity work. It’s not him being a quarterback. He just seems like a genuinely nice person and we need more Tebows.”
